Bagrati Cathedral to be restored to its initial state

20.06.12 20:15

Bagrati Cathedral - the 11th-century cathedral church in the city of Kutaisi in Western Georgia will be restored to its initial state, Georgia`s Culture Minister Nikoloz Rurua said today after the meetings held in the UNESCO.

Nikoloz Rurua said the restoration efforts of the world cultural heritage monument were suspended due to some incomprehensibility. The restoration process was underway in accordance with the project drafted by experts selected by the UNESCO.

Although, later, as the minister said the organization sent less qualified experts to Georgia to examine the monument; therefore, the unqualified conclusion caused the resentment that arose around the monument.

"All the lies which were spread through photos and renders in the social networks are just misinformation aimed at destruction, politicizing of the issue and discrediting the idea. We will obviously disperse the lies very soon", he said.

The Georgian Culture Minister discussed the mentioned issues with the head of the world heritage service. After returning from Paris, he intends to hold a special press conference together with the restorer and the head of Georgia`s cultural heritage foundation.

Meanwhile, Nikoloz Rurua intends to report all details about the restoration of teh cathedral to the patriarchate of Georgia.
