UEFA to investigate Larnaca incident
10.08.12 11:40
A dispute at Larnaca’s Antonis Papadopoulos Stadium, where Georgia’s FC Dila Gori played vs. Anorthosis of Cyprus, grew into a mass clash between the fans of Anorthosis and the police The fans of the Cyprus team, dissatisfied with the game played by their favorites, rushed onto the stadium - Georgian footballers had to leave the field promptly to avoid any complications. UEFA special commission is in charge to investigate the incident. Eight minutes before the end of the match, main referee of the game stopped it. The fans of Anorthosis intended to disrupt the game, some rushing onto the field, others setting fires on tribunes. Some saboteurs broke down TV equipment providing live transmitting of the game. The riot on the stadium lasted fifteen minutes. Afterwards, the clash continued in the streets of the Nicosia; this time the fans clashed with the police. The irritated fans began to run to the field after the Georgian footballers hit the third goal. Briefly after the referee`s whistle, Georgian sportsmen left the field. The Ammochostos side took the early initiative, with Giannis Okkas failing to score on two occasions in the first 30 minutes of the game. The visitors’ first serious threat to Marko Blazic’s goal came in the 31st minute, when he was forced to produce a great save after Mate Vatsadze’s shot. At this point it was obvious the Georgians had not come to defend, as they needed to score at least twice in regulation to advance. Seven minutes after the interval it was Vatsadze who opened proceedings, and their skipper Lasha Salukvadze thereafter made it 2-0 with 14 minutes remaining. Vincent Laban was shown a straight red card two minutes later and in-form Vatsadze netted again in the 81st minute to ensure his side’s place in today’s draw. The outraged home fans then invaded the pitch seven minutes from time, forcing Hungarian referee Mihaly Fabian to abandon the match. Anorthosis supporters went on to pelt police with stones, injuring two officers. FC Dila team returned to Georgia this morning. Fans of the winner team are still celebrating this victory.
