New Cross erected upon the dome of Bagrati Temple

17.08.12 14:36

New cross has been erected upon the dome of the Bagrati Temple, which was reconstructed under the project of a Georgian architect, Vano Gremelashvili. Along with hundreds of worshippers, President Saakashvili attended the ceremony. Archbishop Kalistrate welcomed the president in the yard of the temple, blessed him and presented him with an icon of King Davit Aghmashenebeli.

President Saakashvili addressed the worshippers and spoke about the meaning of the restoration of Bagrati Temple.

`This temple was destroyed by the Russian artillery and in other our churches frescos were whitewashed. There are times of scattered stones and times of collecting them. Today the time has come of up building. We must restore everything, we must construct everything and this is not the property of any political party, it belongs to all Georgia, politicians, non-politicians, worshippers and atheists. Bagrati is the symbol of unified Georgia,` Saakashvili said.
