Philip Gordon comments on Georgia-Russia issue

16.03.12 10:00

The United States has been always openly demonstrating its position regarding the Russia`s approach to the issue of Georgia, as this kind of approach is against the interests of the United States - Assistant Secretary, Bureau of European and Eurasian Affairs Philip H. Gordon has commented on Russia`s policy towards the former-Soviet republic in Washington at the BPC Panel discussion, `Putin`s Return: The Political and Commercial Implications for America`.
`From the start we’ve said, the President said that even as we pursue these concrete agreements we will be clear when Russia is doing things that we don’t believe are in our interest or that we disagree with. We’ve done so on a range of issues, on the question of Georgia, and on the question of democracy,` Gordon said.
U.S. Senior authority also commented on the parliamentary elections conducted in Russia last December. He said the position of the United States was also firm regarding the violations revealed; however, the Russian government did not appreciate it.
Gordon also spoke about the trade restriction agreement with Russia, saying its nullification would be useful for American businessmen in the first place, so it is in the interest of the United States to graduate Russia from the Jackson -Vanik agreement as it contradicts the WTO regulations, which Russia will join soon.
