Toma Chageishvili began working on the documentary program "Georgia - Modern History" in January 2001 in Rustavi 2 Broadcasting Company. 24 documentaries have been shot since then. Director of the documentaries - Demna Japaridze, journalist - Zaza Jgharkava.
High production documentary films gives the audience in depth look at the most interesting periods of Georgian modern history. Combining dramatic storyline and historical research, and using unique material including secret documents, rare photographs, seldom seen archival and TV footage, the films explore the most remarkable personas and striking events.

Lavrenty Beria, police chief and the first official of Cheka, fulfilled all his directives. Kandid Charkviani headed Georgian Communist Party from 1932 to 1952 and met with Stalin in different situations: official and unofficial surroundings. The documentary describes meetings with the leader, memories of unknown details of his life, parents, children and friends in the Communist Party. |

He describes Stalin’s menu and predilection for alcoholic of the members of Politburo. He reviews the last period of Stalin’s life, when years changed soul of the great leader. Ascetic Bolshevik, who even did not come to his mother’s funeral, suddenly decides to visit his native Gori, though he changes his mind and returns to Kremlin. Charkviani recollects days Stalin spent in Likani and Tskaltubo, which turned out to be crucial for him. |

| The last part of the film is dedicated to one of the last acts issued by Stalin regarding bribery and anti-communist grouping in Georgia. This act was followed by the so-called “Megrelians’ case” and end of Charkviani’s career. He was dismissed from his rank and moved to Middle Asia from Georgia, which meant going into exile. The main target of this case exceeded the Georgian opposition party and was aimed at Kremlin, where Stalin was preparing a massive purge of the Communist Party. It was the period when Stalin regarded Beria as his arch-enemy. The plan was not fulfilled – the leader died, though Beria was arrested and executed in three months. |
